Before there were trophies or anthems, there was Hans Gamper. Arriving in Barcelona in 1899 to visit his uncle, this Swiss businessman saw a city without organized football and changed it forever. His advertisement in *Los Deportes* on 22 October 1899, declaring his wish to form a football club, gathered eleven men who would become the club's first family at the Gimnasio Solé on 29 November 1899.

Gamper’s tenure was a rollercoaster of triumph and necessity. He captained the side to its first title, the Copa Macaya in 1901–02, netting a hat-trick in a 15–0 victory over Català on 23 March 1902. He also scored in the first-ever El Clásico on 13 May 1902, a 3–1 win over Madrid FC. In 1908, he became president for the first time as the club was on the verge of folding, with several better players retired and not replaced, and the club having won nothing since the Campionat de Catalunya of 1905. One of his main achievements was getting the funds for the construction of their own stadium in 1909, the Camp de la Indústria, which is regarded as the main element that helped the club grow in the 1910s. Under Gamper's leadership, Barcelona won eleven Championat de Catalunya, six Copa del Rey and four Pyrenees Cup.
